Calgary Ultrasound

Today we headed to the Foothills Calgary Hospital to have another ultrasound and to get more answers about our little one. We were hoping for the best. Our ultrasound appointment took a whole hour. After the ultrasound they took us into a room where you wait to talk to the radiologist doctor and paediatric doctor about the results of the ultrasound. Both doctors came in together to discuss the results. Our son was diagnosed with a serious birth defect called myelomeningocele, also known as Spina Bifida.

I had heard of Spina Bifida, but never really knew what it was. Josh on the other hand knew what myelomeningocele, from his two years of medical schooling. For those that don't know, Spina Bifida is where the spinal cord does not completely close up during the first month of the pregnancy. The amniotic fluid damages the nerves, causing paralysis, club feet, loss of bladder and bowel control. It also can cause learning disabilities to mental retardation, and sometimes a enlarged or abnormal head size. The doctors gave us as much info as he could at the time.

With the ultrasound results the doctors also had concern that the baby wasn't opening it's hands open all the way which shows a increased risk for Trisomy 18. They have a test they can do called Amniocentesis which will give you the results back in 3 working day to know if our little one had it. So Josh and I both agree to have the procedure done.

During the procedure an ultrasound is used to determine the size of the baby, position of the placenta and the amniotic fluid volume around our baby. The doctor then inserts a needle though your abdomen. A small amount of amniotic fluid is removed and sent for chromosome tests and open neural tube defects.

We then left the hospital with a whole bunch of mixed emotions of what we been told. Wondering: How can I raise a little boy that I may not ever be able to walk? Why would an innocent unborn child have to enter the world with physical or mental obstacles?  Should I sell our house since all of the bedrooms are on the second floor?

22 Weeks - Trials

I am humbled that the lord would trust us with this very special baby. And I am humbled that he believes that we are strong enough to handle this trial.

It's a Boy!

We are so excited to be having another boy, well most of us.
Lincoln said " we are having a boy, cause I wanted a boy."He's pretty excited to be having a brother. Lacey on the other had cried when we told her it was a boy. She say " I already have a brother". She's excited for a baby though.

21 Week Ultrasound

We are both so happy with the opportunity to bring another sweet little baby into our lives and family. I love going for an ultrasound and it makes things just a bit more real.

But the typical happy news was hampered when we were on our way home from our ultrasound appointment and we got a call from Dr Stewart our doctor, to come in. As he'd like to talk to Josh and I in person together. Right then I knew something wasn't right. We were able to make the arrangement and both go to the doctors that same day. From the ultrasound, the doctor had concerns that our baby had Meningocele (spine wasn't fully closed which means he has a birth defect called Spina Bifida). They wanted to send us to Calgary for another ultra sound and further testing to find out the correct dicnotices.

The next few days were tough, so many emotions evolved while trying to comphrend everything that was going on. I didn't know what to say and I couldn't believe how this was happening.

16 & 20 Weeks

How far along? 20 Weeks! We’ve hit the halfway mark (I’m actually in denial-but oh so excited)

Baby Stats: Baby is the size of a mango and weighing about 10.58 oz (20 weeks).Doctor says its a very active baby.

Maternity clothes? Still mixing some maternity and some regular clothing, non maternity shirts are starting to get a tad short though.

Symptoms: At 17 weeks I started feeling this little one move, by 18 weeks Josh could feel the movement too. Feeling a lot of movement this week from baby, as the weeks go on. I'm feeling a bit tired but I think that’s just from moving and trying to get all our boxes unpacked. Other than that I feel completely normal, other than my growing belly and feeling pressure from my round ligament.

Looking forward to: Getting started on the nursery! Or a crib set up in Lincoln’s bedroom. I just want to get the rest of the house unpacked first.

Gender:  Still Unknown. We find out this week :)

At my 20 week appointment, I meet with Dr Kahn for the first time for this pregnancy. She advises me to have a c-section. Due to my history from my last two labours and my placenta not wanting to come out. Dr Kahn said if I try a vaginal birth, I will most likely need a hysterectomy and a blood transfusion.

Our New House

We bought a house and we love it! We are so excited for this new adventure of staying in Canada. Lincoln and Lacey have done so good with all the the changes in their lives, but it will be nice not having to move so often. They both adjusted well with our move into our new house. We just have to get unpacked and settled. Then we will list pictures of our house.

Lacey's Three

Lacey such a fun little girl to have in our family. She sure knows how to put a smile on your face. She has so much personality. She's energetic, full of life, silly, independent, feisty and caring. We love our little Lacey and can't believe she's already three.

Weight: 38lbs
Height: 35 inches tall (2 feet 11 inches)
Clothes size: 3T and 4T clothing, depending on which brand it is.
Favourite Food: Loves yogurt with granola, white milk, oranges, candy!

Words from Lacey:
When we were at Walmart one day, Lacey found a toy she really wanted. She asked a few times to get the toy. Josh explained how we don’t have money right now to buy toys, so we will not be able to get the toy this time. Lacey pulled out a penny from her hoodie pocket and replied “ I have money”. It was so cute! I wish that penny would have been enough to buy that toy for her.

Lacey pooped on the potty, so we giver her treats at times to help her be more consistent. One day Lacey pooped so I gave her a treat, rights after she went into the next room and said to Nana and Lacey says to Nana moto - “I’m a good girl, mommy says I can have more worms”, nana says “ should we ask mom”, lacey -“ no”
