Surgery Day

January 22 - Friday
Surgery was set for 8:30 in the morning, Then it was changed to 10:00am. Dad decided to go down to eat breakfast since it wasn’t for a while, then as soon as he sat down to eat he got called back up to the NICU over the intercom. He was called to inform him that surgery was pushed back to 8:30am.

Oliver finally went in for surgery around 9:30am. Apparently it took until about 10:30am to get a vein for sedation, so it took a bit longer then expected. Josh sat and waited for Oliver at the Children's hospital, as he wanted to be there when the surgeons came out to say how the surgery went.

I thought I would be a complete WRECK knowing my baby who was one day old was going into neuro surgery but I wasn't. I was at peace knowing this was supposed to happen and he would be okay. There was still a lot of unknown, like the out come of the surgery. I just had to have faith and trust our heavenly father that he was looking after our little Oliver.  I still had my moments sitting in a hospital room at a different hospital then Josh and Oliver.

The 4 1/2 hour wait was the longest wait of my life. I prayed so much that my little baby was being looked after.  It was still very hard just waiting for the surgery to be done. Having a doctor do a major surgery on one day old baby. It was hard just trusting that things would be okay. At 2:30pm the neurosurgeon came out to say how the surgery went. He described the Dura layer of spinal cord as being very thin which made it a bit more difficult to close the cord. But said the surgery went very well and that he was very pleased with how it went and how well the plastic surgeon was doing before he left. After the neurologist finished closing the spinal cord then the plastic surgeon did a muscle and skin pull from the back to cover the defect. (He called it a reverse tummy tuck).

Mom was discharged from the foothills later on in the afternoon and was able to come over after surgery to be with Oliver. So I'm able to stay by Oliver with Josh now. I could have been discharged earlier but Josh needed to sign Oliver's registration of birth before I could leave and Josh didn't want to leave the Children's hospital incase the surgeons came out.

Oliver had to lay horizontal for the next 10 days, to let his spine heal properly. He's a strong little guy. For everything he's had to go through in his first 2 days of his life. It has all gone very well. We have been truly blessed and have felt Heavenly Father love for us.

Oliver is still sedated, and intubated, the tubes will come out either tonight or tomorrow morning. We are also very thankful for all the prayers and fasting done on our behalf. We have truly felt blessed during this challenging time.
