Oliver's First Time Swimming

We figured it was time to take Oliver swimming. Oliver loves water, especially at bath/shower time each night. I think it may have to due with me taking long hot shower each night while I was pregnant with him. We figured he would probably like swimming too. We went to Nicholas Sharon Pool since they have a toddler pool, thats heated. Oliver loved his first swimming experience. An hour and a half and he was still chilling in the pool with us. I love having three kids who love water so much. We will defiantly we going on another family swim.

Lincoln could I live in water if we let him. He loves to swim. We still miss our Caribbean adventure.

Easter!

Dying eggs is a fun tradition that we like to do as a family each year. Lincoln and Lacey are at such a fun age and they got right into it this year.

Smiles

We love this little guy so much. If you talk to him these days he's full of smiles and loves trying to coo when you talk to him.

March 2016

I love our crazy busy life. With three it's just that much more busy but I wouldn't change anything. I love all three of them so much and love spending my days with them. They can be long and tiring but I love being a mom.

Lacey's a little mom to Oliver. I love how she knows how to calm him down when he's upset.

Lincoln loves being a big brother to Oliver. He looks forward to bed time to snuggle with Oliver. I love their brotherly bond they ave already.

Brain Awareness

It's Brain Awareness Week at the University Of Lethbridge. We went to visit Nana Harker where she goes to school. We got to learn about the brain and see brains. Lincoln and Lacy thought it was pretty neat seeing a real human brain.

St Patrick's Day!

I'm one lucky mom to have these three as my children.

Oliver's 8 Weeks

Oliver is a very content baby. We love having a happy baby that only cries when he's hungry, has a stomach ache or has a dirty diaper. He's a dream baby like Lincoln was. Oliver reminds me so much of Lincoln. Oliver eats every 3 hours in the day and any where from 3-8 hour feeds at night. His night time feeds, he barely wakes up, we feed him, change his bum and he's out. We are able to feed him at night in 30 minutes or less. I say we because I pump and Josh bottle feeds Oliver. With our team work it makes it doable, as pumping and bottle feeding can be double the amount of work at times. I couldn't do it without Josh. I also like pumping as I can then feed Oliver when he needs to and pump  when it's convenient for the Day Home.

When Oliver was first born and we brought him home we had any where from 1-3 appointments each week, which was busy. I thought I was going to go crazy with all the appointments. It felt like they were taking over our lives. Lucky that only lasted for the first 6 weeks. Once we had our follow up and mylo clinic appointments, the appointments then slowed down. The paediatrician every 3 weeks, physiotherapy once a month and mylo clinic every three months.

We are still watching Oliver's head circumference. When we were up in Calgary at our last mylo clinic appointments and met with the neurosurgeon on March 7, we were told to come prepare to stay as Oliver would most likely (80%) have surgery for a shunt to be put in to help drain his ventricles in his brain. Josh and I were both shocked when Dr Riva-Cambrin, Oliver's neurosurgeon told us he'd still like to wait. Meaning no surgery yet... When you have Spina Bifida and are in the womb, the cerebrospinal fluid from your brain drains through the lesion, where the spinal cord is out of the body. With this happening your body learns to produce way more cerebrospinal fluid then your body needs after the spinal cord is put back in and the back is closed up. Once Oliver had his back surgery at 24 hours old, the cerebrospinal fluid is suppose to drain to our stomachs. The reason Oliver's head circumference is still growing is because his body had been producing the same amount of cerebrospinal fluid. They hope over time his body with adjust to producing less cerebrospinal fluid, if he's body can't regulate that on his own then a shut needs to be put in place. The reason Oliver's doctor wants to wait is because Oliver's heads been growing but he has no other symptoms, like vomitting, irritable, full soft spot on he's head, etc which are signs a shut is needed. With Oliver only having one symptom. Baby's heads have a grow spurt till 6-8 weeks then their grow slows down a bit, so the doctors want to see if Oliver's head circumference starts to slow down on his own. Oliver's head has been growing a cm a week since we've been home (11 days old), but over the past two weeks Oliver's head circumference has only increase by 0.4cms.

Words Of Lincoln And Lacey

I love all the things Lincoln and Lacey say and do, so I have to write them down so we don't forget them:

Lincoln
- "you hurt my feelings, it feels like you are breaking my heart"
- Lincoln is such a boy, I was trying to take a picture of Lincoln and Lacey for Pink Shirt Day and all they would give me was their silly smiles. I told them if they give me one good smile we'd be done. Lincoln then farts and said " that will make Lacey smile". Making the perfect picture that we got with natural smiles.
-" We drink cow milk, Oliver drinks your milk, so your like a cow"

Lacey
-Here's some words Lacey says, "bemember" for remember, "pars" for cars (just like lincoln use to), "wash mouth" for mouthwash, "alligator" for Gatorade, "kitchen" for chicken.
- Lacey loves watching Peppa Pig (it’s a english pig cartoon), she has started using words from the show like, rubbish bin, super market, sofa,…
- Lacey loves making us laugh, she held a bowl up to her chest and said "look at my big boob".
- At church Lacey sees a bolding man. Lacey says " mom what happened to all his hair". In quite a loud voice.

I love how all prayers by Lincoln and Lacey mention Oliver. Lacey will almost always say "thank you that Oliver is home from the hospital"

Myelomeningocele Clinic - 6 Weeks

We had a long busy good day with all of Oliver's appointments.

Physiotherapy - They are glad we are already seeing a physiotherapist in Lethbridge. Both physiotherapists will be working together to helping Oliver. The Physiotherapist just assessed Oliver today.

Orthopaedic surgeon- He can't predict any thing at this age as so many things can change. Can have a better prediction at 3-6 yrs, for his leg ability. They had concern that Oliver's right hip might be dislocated due to weak muscles. Oliver was sent for an ultrasound of the hip. Good news is Oliver's hip isn't dislocated. They will check its position when he's a year old.

Nuerosugeron - Oliver's head circumference is their main concern. When he was born it was in the 97 percentile and it's gone up from there. But there are no other symptoms/concerns for the need of a shunt yet like vomiting, fussy, full fontinel- soft spot, etc. They like to push the shunt surgery off as long as they can. As it's more beneficial to do the surgery when the child is a bit older. Nuerosugeron- Dr Riva-Cambrin says that Oliver's soft spot is soft and not full. That he'd like us to wait and see if Oliver's body can manage on his own before intervening with surgery. We will still monitor his head circumference and call in the numbers weekly. The plan to see the nuerosugeron in 6 weeks. Unless we have concerns come up before hand.

Urology- Where Oliver's lesion was it can affect his nerves that go to his bladder. The ultrasound showed that Oliver's kidneys are beautiful, bladder is doing everything it's supposed to. Bladder lining is normal thickness. If a bladder isn't functioning properly if can get thick also causing the Kinsey's to enlarge. Next appointment in 3 months, if ultrasound is good then next appointment in 6 month, then in a year.

We got lots of good news today. With Oliver not having to have surgery this week, wasn't quite what we expected. But we know that Oliver has a good group of doctors looking after him and know what's best for him.

Oliver's 6 Weeks Old

At 5 weeks, Oliver feeds at night are anywhere from 3.5-6 hours, which is so nice.

At 6 weeks Olivers' weight is 10 lbs 5 oz. Oliver loves to grunt and groan and make lots of noises. A trick to calming Oliver down is to hold is hand. Oliver has also started doing a side smirk like Josh thats so cute.
